Research shows that more and more consumers want to know the origin of meat when eating out. At the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC), we have produced ‘The Best Practice Guidelines’ - a voluntary code for caterers put into the simplest terms how best to tell their customers where they are sourcing meat from.
They were created to ensure that compliance would involve minimal cost and upheaval for caterers. In fact, caterers do not need to change their meat suppliers to comply with the Guidelines. They simply need to ensure that country of origin details are provided for all dishes on the menu where meat is a main ingredient.
Many caterers would argue that their customers don’t want to have to wade through endless reams of small-print on menus, so the Guidelines offer advice to caterers purchasing meat from a number of different countries or those that regularly change their supply, on how to avoid this.
